Why a May 21 Rapture would NOT be a good thing.

Posted on May 20, 2011

As a believer in the rapture, and one who looks forward to it, I have to make the following observations. First, let’s get one thing out of the way. The Bible makes it clear that we cannot know the timing of the rapture. In speaking of His return, Jesus said:

Matthew 24:36
36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.

We also read this of Paul:

1 Thessalonians 5:2
2 For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.

Keeping this in mind, anyone who would dare to predict the time of the rapture is certain to be wrong. Therefore, we can be certain that it won’t happen on May 21, 2011.

Because the Bible says we can’t know the time, it will be a good thing that it won’t happen on May 21 (or any other predicted date). Why do I say that? Aren’t we suppossed look forward to the rapture? Shouldn’t it be our desire. Absolutely yes, to all of those questions. So why, in this case, would it not be good?

Consider this: If God tells us we can’t know the time, and then the rapture happens in accordance with man’s prediction, then God has not been true to His word, which says we can’t know. If God is not true to His word, then even our salvation and eternal security is at stake. In such a case, we can’t know what to believe. I take comfort in the fact that God is consistent, and ALWAYS true to His word. It is our assurance! The rapture is a great thing, but it has to happen on God’s terms, according to His word. If it were to happen according to man’s terms, such as a May 21 rapture, it would be a terrible thing. I am thankful and comforted by the fact that God will rapture His children according to His will, and no one else’s.
