This is the sixth in a series of verse-by-verse expositions of the book of Romans. This message was delivered at Hillcrest Baptist Church on the morning of April 7, 2013. This message deals with the dangers of compromising the Word of God with worldly philosophy, particularly evolution. This contains an audio recording of my message, along with my sermon notes and a study outline. Please note that the sermon notes are not a full transcript.

SERMON OUTLINE:

SERMON NOTES:

Romans 1:20-23 / The Evolution of Sin

vv. 20-23:
The creation bears witness to the creator.

Psalms 19:1

Though we see evidence of God in the creation, creation is not a perfect record or equal with scripture.

The world is cursed, under the dominion of satan, and inhabited by man (who has a deceitful heart).

Genesis 3:17

Jeremiah 17:9

Romans 8:22

Since the creation is under the curse of sin, it is an imperfect witness.

Since we are imperfect, our perception is often flawed.

Therefore, we must rely on the only perfect record, and that is God’s Word.

We must not allow outside influences affect our interpretation of the scripture.

2 Timothy 3:16

Proverbs 30:5-6

2 Peter 1:20-21

The meaning of the scripture is not a matter of the reader’s personal point of view.

The Scripture means what it says and says what it means!

Both then and now, people were interpreting Scripture based on flawed outside influences.

Rather than letting Scripture speak for itself, they were reinterpreting its meaning.

As a consequence, the credibility, truthfulness and authority of the the message of of the church has been destroyed.

All too often, the undiluted Word of God is not preached.

When you change and reinterpret the Word of God, it ceases to be the Word of God.

It becomes the word of man, and the word of man carries no authority. It cannot save souls or change lives.

Man’s word is powerless.

Though people may believe the word of man over the Word of God, they are without excuse.

V.21:
Paul’s narrative, here, is a scathing rejection of their pantheistic belief.

Pantheism is the belief that everything is god, that the universe and nature are divine.

Pantheism is rooted in evolution, even back then – they just didn’t call it evolution.

Though pantheism still exists today, more common is evolution without any reference to God.

They Gave no credit to God, they chose to deny Him.

They were not thankful.

This makes sense, because If they deny the Creator, who would they be thankful to?

They became vain in their imaginations:

They invented a Godless creation.

They began to try to figure out ways to explain creation without God.

Creation without God, is the core of evolution.

The theory of evolution is destructive!

No matter what some false teachers try to tell you, it is impossible to reconcile evolution with Scripture.

To do so only results in a twisted, perverted, unbiblical view of Scripture.

Theistic evolution simply cannot exist!

The result of this type of compromise is that their hearts were darkened (because of unbelief).

This is the state of so many that have accepted the lie of evolution, and it is this same lie that is being forced on our children.

It has become a stumbling block to the faith of many kids.

Mark 9:42

God’s Word clearly testifies that He is the creator. Evolution simply doesn’t fit with Scripture’s revelation.

If we can’t believe what God tells us about the earthly things, then how will we ever believe the heavenly things?

John 3:12

V.22:
What they think to be wise is really foolish.

Evolution is destructive in nature

Evolution offers no peace or future hope

Evolution is not even scientific. There is no scientific basis for it.

It is a false science, and results in false doctrines.

1 Timothy 6:20-21

Some may call God’s word foolishness, but God’s foolishness saves.

1 Corinthians 1:20-21

V.23:
They began to worship the creation, not the creator

This is evident in many religions, and is even followed by some “Christians”

Jesus is the only way

People will not be saved by man’s wisdom, worldly values, politics, laws or military power.

The only hope is to rebuild the foundation of the church, and not allow society or worldly wisdom to creep in.

The church needs to stand fast and stand on the scripture, without apology or compromise.

Conclusion:
Call for a commitment to God’s word

Call for hearers to allow the Holy Spirit to search them and correct their world view, if needed

Call for salvation
