Liberty

SERMON NOTES:

Liberty, freedom – It is a precious gift of God.

The value of freedom is really beyond our comprehension. To say that it is worth fighting and dying for is an understatement. Our Lord thought freedom to be so precious, that He allows it in spite of the consequences. He has given us the freedom to either accept or reject Him. Because of this freedom, many will reject Him and spend an eternity in hell. Still. . . He thought freedom to be necessary. This tells us a lot about the value of freedom in God’s eyes.

On Independence Day, Americans should give thanks to the Author of liberty that we have been privileged to live in a land of liberty. It is a land where we can worship God freely, in accord with His Word. Liberty; however, is not license.

  • Romans 6:1-2

The essence of the American system is liberty under law. Specifically, it is “the law of nature and of nature’s God” – The natural laws of God’s world and the revealed laws of God’s Word. Within that framework we have liberty—but not liberty to defy either the physical law of gravity or the spiritual law of liberty.

The law of liberty is found in Scripture and has been used throughout history in legal systems of nations. However, many people today are seeking license rather than liberty. They will reject the idea of the law of liberty, and say it is a contradiction in terms. But according to God’s Word, it is not. God’s Word is the truth and Jesus said that the truth will set you free.

  • John 8:32

God’s word is truth!

  • Romans 3:3-4

Sin is the transgression of the law, and sin brings death, not freedom!

  • 1 John 3:4
  • James 1:15

No one can be saved by the law, and such should not be our focus. Our focus should always be to lead people to a saving faith in Jesus Christ. And those who are saved, will love God’s law.

  • Romans 7:12

We should understand that the law of God (Word of God) brings true liberty.

  • Psalm 119:44-45

There is truly a law of liberty, and it will only be found revealed in the Word of God. We need to stand fast in our liberty, and be blessed by it.

  • Galatians 5:1
  • James 1:25

Our liberty should never be used as license to sin. As such we dishonor God, and cause others to sin, as well. If what we do causes our brother to stumble, then we ought not do it, no matter how much liberty we have.

Our liberty should always be used to honor God, not for our own self indulgence. Let’s commit to using our liberty to share and demonstrate the Gospel.
