SERMON NOTES:

James 2:19

What is a demon?

Quite simply, a demon is a fallen, rebellious angel.

They are the angels who followed Satan. The Bible says they sinned.

2 Peter 2:4

They share all of the same attributes of the other angels that we’ve looked at.

Those fallen angels consist of one third of all of the angels, and it was for them that hell was prepared.

Revelation 12:4

Matthew 25:41

When did the angels rebel?

While we can’t know the precise time of the fall, we can know with great certainty the general time frame.

Neither satan nor the other angels could have fallen until after the 6th day of the creation week.

Genesis 1:31

“Very good” by God’s standard, can be no less than perfect.

Since He was looking at “everything He had made”, which includes the angels, they couldn’t have gone bad yet.

We should remember that the angels, just like the rest of creation, were created good.

So, we can say for sure they fell sometime after the 6th day, and before the time that Satan tempted Eve.

We don’t know exactly how long that was. The best we can do is narrow it down to a general time frame.

Adam and Eve were expelled from the garden very quickly after they sinned.

The Bible makes no record of any children being born or conceived while Adam and Eve were still in the garden.

Seth was born while Adam was 130 years old, and he was born after both Cain and Abel.

Genesis 4:25

Genesis 5:3

Both Cain and Abel were grown when Abel was murdered. (They were old enough to farm, and make their own sacrifices).

This tells us that the maximum time that Adam and Eve were in the garden had to be approximately 100 years.

Therefore, Satan and his followers must have fallen somewhere between the 6th day, and 100 or so years into creation.

I personally believe it was much sooner, for a few reasons.

  • Adam and Eve were two perfect people, in a perfect environment, with no inhibitions before they sinned. Plus, they had been commanded to multiply.

Genesis 1:28

Even so, Eve had not yet conceived when they were expelled from the garden.

You logically assume that the first conception would have happened fairly quickly.

  • Eve hadn’t even been given a name yet (other than “woman”)at the time they were expelled.

Genesis 3:20

These are not conclusive proofs, but they seem indicative of a short time in the garden.

Such would be consistent with human nature, it doesn’t take us long to mess up a good thing.

The certainty of the matter is that satan and his followers rebelled after the 6th day of creation, and probably within the first 100 years.

With Satan’s first deception of Eve, he set a pattern that would remain consistent, which we will see throughout this study.

The main weapon of a demon is deception. This is but one good reason to know Scripture.

We see an example of this in the exchange between Christ and satan.

Demons will take Scripture and twist it and pervert it, such that they will deceive many.

Know the Word of God, it is a sword to be used against His enemies. They cannot stand against it.

Take the shield of faith, that you may quench satan’s fiery darts.

We’d do well to take the threat seriously, and to be aware.
